Promoting a love of reading
Reading is at the heart of our curriculum. Reading is a key life skill.
At St James C of E Primary, we are committed to teaching our pupils to become skilled readers who develop a comprehensive understanding of words, language and texts as they move through school.
Through using a range of strategies, our aim is to ensure that pupils develop a love of reading so that they can read for purpose and for pleasure. The texts we have chosen offer a window to the world, which enables our pupils to develop an understanding and acceptance of the world around them.
It is essential that our approach to teaching phonics and reading is accessible to all learners, regardless of background.
We endeavour for our children to become independent readers and thinkers who can develop their own thoughts and opinions on a range of familiar authors.
